He has an older brother and a younger sister who grew up in his hometown of Maia. From an early age, he had a great interest in becoming a professional footballer and luckily his parents and his brother Ricardo also supported him in playing football. So in 2002, at the age of 8, he started his youth career with the Portuguese football club Infesta.

The Portuguese football star started his international career with the Portuguese national football team against Saudi Arabia on November 10, 2017, in Viseu.

During his time with Portugal, he scored 33 goals and was named the best player in the league. On 7 April, he scored his 50th Premier League goal from 50 yards (46 m) in a 2–2 draw against United's arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. He was then named Manchester United Player of the Month for April after scoring seven goals in six appearances that month. On 23 May, Fernandes won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, becoming a three-time recipient of the award.
